The 2027 Toyota GR86 arrives this summer with a light refresh that keeps the rear-drive coupe’s core identity intact while making small but deliberate changes to its driving feel, safety systems, and interior.
No sheetmetal surgery, just a new shade
Toyota isn’t touching the GR86’s exterior design. The coupe, now in its fifth year on the market, retains its familiar silhouette. The only visible update is a new solid gray paint option called Thunder, joining the existing palette without replacing any colors.
The interior sees more attention. The Premium trim now features a black finish on switches, knobs, and the shifter, creating a more cohesive look. A new Cockpit Red interior option pairs black Ultrasuede seats with red leather accents on the bolsters, extending to the door panels and floor mats. It’s a subtle nod to enthusiasts who prefer a sportier cabin aesthetic.
Safety tech gets a quiet upgrade
Toyota has added a monocular camera to help detect objects at intersections, a feature that complements the existing stereo camera system. The company says the stereo camera’s recognition range has nearly doubled, improving its ability to identify vehicles ahead when adaptive cruise control is active.
These changes reflect a broader shift in the industry, where even entry-level sports cars are expected to offer advanced driver-assistance features. The GR86’s updates suggest Toyota is balancing performance appeal with the practical demands of modern buyers—without turning the car into a tech showcase.

Mechanical tweaks focus on feel, not power
The GR86’s 2.4-liter naturally aspirated flat-four engine remains unchanged, still producing 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, with Toyota claiming 0-60 mph times of 6.1 seconds for the manual and 6.6 seconds for the automatic.
While the numbers stay the same, Toyota has recalibrated the throttle for a smoother, more linear response. The company also adjusted the shifter interlock between fourth and fifth gear, widening the chamfer by about 0.02 inches to improve quick downshifts. It’s a minor change, but one that could make a noticeable difference for drivers who prioritize engagement.
The Performance Package returns for 2027, retaining its Brembo brakes and SACHS dampers. No other mechanical updates were announced.
Pricing and availability
The 2027 GR86 will be available in base and Premium trims when it arrives at dealers this summer. Toyota hasn’t released pricing yet, with details expected closer to the launch date.
