The 2027 BMW 3-Series lineup will continue to offer a range of drivetrain options, including gasoline, plug-in hybrid, and diesel, alongside the new electric i3 model. BMW Group is keeping the internal combustion engine at the heart of its next-generation 2027 3-Series lineup, as confirmed to WardsAuto.
The new M350 xDrive will be a key part of this lineup, with a 443-hp straight-six engine and a function that can send all of its power to the rear wheels. This model will replace the current M340i xDrive and will feature a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder gasoline engine, a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, and an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Performance Features
The M350 xDrive introduces a Drift Moment feature, accessible via the central display, which redirects all engine power to the rear wheels. This feature will be available in 2027 and can also be enabled through a Remote Software Upgrade for vehicles delivered prior to its official launch.
BMW is setting its gasoline version up to be quicker, with the M350 weighing hundreds of pounds less than the i3 EV. As a result, the M350 has a 0-62 mph time of 4.1 seconds, compared to the i3 50 xDrive’s time of 4.7 seconds.
Electric and Gasoline Options
The i3 50 xDrive uses an electric motor at each axle to develop 463 hp and 476 lb-ft of torque. The i3 is the first electric 3-Series and only the second production model to use BMW’s Neue Klasse architecture, which operates at 800 volts and supports DC fast-charging at up to 400 kW.
A new M3, powered by a 6-cylinder engine, is in development, ensuring it and the M350 remain the sole 6-cylinder variants in the upcoming 3-Series lineup. This approach effectively divides the future of BMW’s key model series into two distinct paths.
Development and Launch
BMW is putting the finishing touches on the eighth-generation 3-Series. The model has been set for a 2027 arrival. A U.S. launch timeline and pricing haven’t yet been revealed.
BMW is currently carrying out final chassis development. The new 3-Series gains a longer wheelbase and wider tracks. Adaptive dampers will be among the performance options.
The braking system has been upgraded and the steering ratio altered. Rear- and all-wheel drive will be available depending on the model.
Design and Technology
BMW is intentionally aligning the design of the i3 and the forthcoming 3-Series, both featuring a modern take on the brand’s signature kidney grille and headlamp design. This unified aesthetic extends to the interior, where the new 3-Series will incorporate the same Panoramic iDrive display and Operating System X software as the i3.
The latest 3-Series boasts a longer wheelbase and wider front and rear tracks compared to its predecessor, with rear- and all-wheel drive options available across the range. BMW has enhanced the braking system and adjusted the steering ratio to improve handling precision.
