
Five days, 3,000 miles, and a roof tent turned a Porsche Macan EV into something resembling a brick in the wind. The journey began at the Channel Tunnel in Folkestone, where the car sat plugged into an Ionity charger while its occupants considered the route ahead. Sub-zero temperatures, unfamiliar roads, and concerns about battery performance loomed over the trip.
Cold weather affects performance—but less than feared
The Macan 4S offers 376 miles on a full charge. That range should make the trip possible. Yet the car’s estimator had already dropped to 220 miles before temperatures reached freezing. Cold weather reduces EV battery efficiency, cutting advertised range by up to 100 miles. Heat pumps help, but they can’t fully protect lithium-ion cells from winter’s effects.

The fastest charging speed observed reached 272 kW—exceeding the car’s theoretical limit.
Europe’s charging network
Denmark passed quickly, including crossings of the Great Belt and Oresund bridges. Sweden’s roads remained mostly clear, though ice patches hinted at worse conditions ahead. The Macan’s range stabilized around 210 miles, allowing stops every 180 miles with a safe margin. The navigation system adjusted in real time, recalculating based on actual energy use.
Porsche’s Charging Service was used during the trip. The network covers major providers across Europe, and the trip never required an outside charger.
As the group moved north, conditions deteriorated. Near Malung, Sweden, temperatures fell to -11°C, and roads turned icy. The Macan’s winter tires gripped in unexpected places, but the car’s weight made downhill sections tricky. Gentle inputs were necessary; letting gravity take over risked losing control.
