Jaguar’s Type 01 interior is a sharp departure from the dashboard screens dominating modern electric vehicles. The automaker revealed the cabin design this week, showing a minimalist approach that abandons the large center infotainment screen and traditional buttons in favor of a driver-focused layout. The design language leans heavily into the “strikethrough motif” seen in previous teasers, incorporating vertical vents that run along the dashboard top and the panel where the windscreen meets the bonnet.
The most immediate change for the Type 01 is the absence of a massive screen in the center of the dashboard. Instead, the entire driving experience is routed through a single, large display located directly ahead of the driver. This screen handles essential functions like speed, navigation, and vehicle settings. The front passenger seat remains untouched by technology, which offers a level of privacy and calm rarely found in contemporary electric vehicles.
Control is maintained through a smartphone-sized touchscreen on the center console, which manages climate controls and media volume. Jaguar has also introduced “concealed compartments” and hidden technologies throughout the cabin. The center console stretches the full length of the car, dividing the interior into distinct sections. While this limits the car’s practicality as a family hauler, it signals a specific target audience for the vehicle.
Inside the Type 01, the layout aims for luxury rather than utility. We suspect the massive armrest will house storage cubbies and perhaps even mechanical theatrics, such as gear selectors or speakers that rise out of the panels when the car is started. This design choice suggests a return to the mechanical engagement of the outgoing XJ saloon rather than the flat, digital interfaces found in competitors.
Jaguar has confirmed the Type 01 is an electric four-door grand tourer. The new platform beneath the bodywork is expected to produce over 1,000 metric horsepower and 959lb ft of torque. The name itself is derived from the brand’s alphabetical sports car lineage, using the “0” to denote zero emissions and the “1” to mark the start of this new era.
Despite the marketing buildup, the name drew some mixed reactions from enthusiasts when it was officially announced. The vehicle will make its debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance during Monterey Car Week on Sunday, August 16. A full reveal in New York is scheduled for October 6, with further teasers expected between now and then.
Competitors are already testing the waters with similar concepts. Audi’s electric plans also focus on unique cabin arrangements to distinguish their lineup from traditional options. Both brands aim to create an immersive environment for the driver, focusing on the tactile experience of the vehicle rather than merely looking at a screen.
