A unique piece of Marvel history is up for grabs: the Acura NSX Roadster driven by Tony Stark in the 2012 film The Avengers. This one-of-a-kind vehicle, currently on auction, offers fans a chance to own a slice of superhero legacy, with proceeds going to charity. Do you remember when Tony Stark swapped his Audi R8 for this very car in the film? Now, it’s your opportunity to bring that iconic moment home.
A Marvel-ous Design
The car, designed by Acura Advanced Design Studio in Los Angeles and built by Trans FX in California, was a fully functional prop. Despite its modern look, it’s based on a 1991 Acura NSX, modified to resemble the 2011 NSX Concept. Inspired by the concept, the car features custom, handmade bodywork made of resin and fiberglass, blending futuristic aesthetics with classic engineering. After the film, Acura preserved it and showcased it during the 35th-anniversary celebration of the NSX, highlighting its significance in automotive and cinematic history.
Its Hot Rod Red exterior, reminiscent of the Iron Man suit, is paired with custom alloy wheels measuring 18 inches up front and 20 inches at the back, and a lowered suspension. The interior features aftermarket bucket seats and a classic NSX dashboard, a contrast to its futuristic exterior. Notably, the windshield is sourced from a Chrysler PT Cruiser, and the car sports decorative silver trim instead of functional headlights, though the full-width LED taillights are operational. The “STARK 33” New York license plate, featured in the film, adds an authentic touch.
Under the Hood
Powering this roadster is a 3.0-liter VTEC V6 engine, paired with a five-speed manual gearbox, sending power to the rear axle. While it lacks the hybrid system of newer NSXs, it retains the reliability the model is known for. The engine is a nod to the first-generation NSX, offering a pure driving experience without electrification.
The car has logged 252,200 miles (405,900 km), but its custom bodywork limits its use to private roads. Despite some minor flaws, including micro-scratches on the bumpers, A-pillars, and doors, paint cracks on the C-pillars, and scuffs around the cabin, it remains a prized collectible. Its condition reflects its history as a functional movie prop, adding to its charm and authenticity.
Auction Details
Listed on Cars & Bids, the auction has already seen a high bid of $98,500, with five days remaining. Given its unique history and condition, it’s expected to surpass the six-figure mark. This NSX Roadster isn’t just a car; it’s a piece of cinematic history, blending Acura’s engineering with Marvel’s imagination. For enthusiasts, it’s a rare opportunity to own a vehicle that bridges the gap between automotive design and superhero lore, especially since the second-gen NSX was never produced as a roadster, making this car truly one-of-a-kind.
