Hyundai launched its N performance division with the 2019 Veloster N model.

Hyundai’s journey from a budget-focused automaker to a performance brand began with a 2002 Elantra GT hatchback. Purchased by a recent college graduate seeking practicality, the car represented Hyundai’s improving reputation since its 1984 inception. This marked a significant turning point, positioning the automaker to compete alongside established performance divisions like BMW M and Mercedes-AMG.

Democratizing Performance

The N division’s creation stemmed from a strategic vision to make high-performance driving accessible to a broader audience. “For decades, performance brands were indeed built around premium and luxury vehicles,” Park explained.

Early Performance Experiments and Brand Evolution

Hyundai’s initial steps toward performance began with models like the Pony, Stellar, and Excel, racing forward from its first crop of cars.

In 2019, the Veloster N arrived as North America’s first “N” offering, marking the start of Hyundai’s shift toward performance. Park emphasized that creating a performance brand from a company not traditionally associated with performance presented significant challenges, requiring a new approach to accessibility and attainability.

From Track to Street

Hyundai’s credibility in performance began with its TCR racing program, where the Elantra N TCR became a benchmark race car. “Creating a performance car is challenging, but creating a performance brand from a company and a country not traditionally associated with performance is even harder,” Park admitted. The Veloster N, launched in North America in 2019, delivered the division’s core pillars: Corner Rascal, Racetrack Capability, and Everyday Sports car. It shared a platform with the globally successful i30 N, which debuted in Germany in 2017 to establish initial credibility.

The Elantra N followed, incorporating racing DNA from TCR victories, including six consecutive class wins at the Nürburgring 24 Hours. “This commitment is embodied in our ‘Never just drive’ mindset and reflected in our ‘Born in Namyang, Honed at the Nürburgring’ development process,” Park noted. The division expanded to include electric models like the Ioniq 5 N and 6 N, featuring innovations such as N e-shift to enhance driver engagement. These vehicles combine track capability with everyday usability, offering performance without the exclusivity typically associated with luxury brands.

Electric Performance Innovation

When developing electric N vehicles, engineers faced a fundamental question: could an EV deliver genuine driver engagement beyond straight-line acceleration? The breakthrough came through new technologies like N e-shift, which creates virtual gear shifts to strengthen the connection between driver and vehicle. Rather than reducing involvement, these innovations enhance it through advanced feedback systems.
